Winter hikes in and around Hallstatt

Hiking in winter has a charm all its own. During the cold season, once you’re wrapped up all nice and cosy in a warm, soft coat, it’s more than just a bit of healthy exercise – it’s balm for the chilly soul. Assuming you’re somewhere as beautiful as the Inner Salzkammergut, of course.

Hallstatt's winter hiking routes

Indulging your wanderlust on a winter hike along cleared routes, following frozen streams or passing through the magic of a snowy forest will clear your mind wonderfully, brushing aside all the hustle and bustle of daily life. That hot cup of tea in a warming tavern or rustic lodge becomes a marvellous treat – one that’s easily worth earning more than once.

Go on a winter hike to dive into Hallstatt’s past and learn about the World Heritage Site. Take a tour and find all the many small, informative plaques around town.

See the winter offers

Hallstatt is the ideal place for winter hiking, since it offers both the perfect scenery and history of many centuries. Check out the Hallstatt World Heritage museum in the town centre as part of a winter hike. You’ll learn about salt mining and how it was transported in days of yore or about the great fire of 1750, in which the saltworks town burned almost entirely to the ground. If you take the tour, we recommend stopping by the ossuary beside the Catholic church. There’s literally nothing like it anywhere in the world.

Snowshoeing at the Dachstein

The Freesports Arena Dachstein Krippenstein offers a very relaxing way to explore the landscape to all winter sports enthusiasts (no matter whether beginners, advanced or professionals): a winter hike with snowshoes! On three different, marked trails you will pass the sights of the Dachstein Krippenstein: World Heritage spiral, 5fingers & Dachstein shark. Tip: Get a Yeti ticket from the Janu sports shop (= combined ticket for cable car & rental snowshoes).
