Lakes in
Salzkammergut

Lake Hallstatt

Emerald green and mystical – Lake Hallstatt is easily one of the Salzkammergut’s most impressive lakes.

During your stay on the lake’s shores, explore its secrets by taking a boat ride or ship tour or drink in a view of the lake from above (tip: Five Fingers on the Krippenstein). We promise you’ll be forging lasting memories. The Heritage.Hotel provides the ideal lodgings on Lake Hallstatt’s shore.

  • Rent a boat for Lake Hallstatt from Schwarzmayer
  • Book a ship tour on Lake Hallstatt with Hemetsberger
  • ‘Fuhr’ trips (punts) on Lake Hallstatt with Mr Immervoll

Our tip:

Take a breather and unwind on a ferry crossing from Hallstatt’s centre to the lake’s eastern shore. Once there, go for a walk along the east shore hiking trail towards Obersee, always hugging Lake Hallstatt’s shoreline, and see the lake’s deepest point from the breathtaking suspension bridge. We recommend stopping for a break at the Seeraunzn in Obersee. Choose between traditional – and very good – Austrian cuisine, a light snack or homemade cake. From Obersee, you can backtrack on foot or take the train back to Hallstatt.

Lake Wolfgang

The most famous lake in the Salzkammergut welcomes its guests to the towns of St. Wolfgang, Strobl and St. Gilgen.

In summer, Lake Wolfgang offers unforgettable holiday fun, especially in and on the water. Whether hiking, diving, water skiing or fishing: Lake Wolfgang is pure entertainment. Don't miss the ride in the historic Schafbergbahn and enjoy the breathtaking view over 7 lakes.

The Postalm is the right destination for sport enthusiasts. It is Austria's largest alpine pasture area where 3,000 animals graze in summer and numerous huts treat hikers and mountain bikers with regional delicacies.

In winter, the Postalm is ideal for ski tourers, winter hikers and cross-country skiers (up to 22 km of groomed trails).

Our tip:

Visit Lake Wolfgang in winter too. Specially in Advent, it is a feast for the eyes. The boat brings you from one Advent market to the other: In the birthplace of Mozart's mother, St. Gilgen, the huts are spread out in the whole town center, in St. Wolfgang, the traditional lantern is the main attraction and in Strobl you can admire a living crib in addition to the classic huts.

Lake Traun

At 191 meters, Lake Traunsee is the deepest lake in Austria and many stories and myths have grown up around it.

Gmunden with it's popular Gmundner ceramics is probably the most famous place on the lake and offers tourists many interesting destinations.
A few years ago, Gmunden and the Schloss Ort were the setting for many films. Not only Schloss Ort but also many other famous locations can be visited by Traunsee shipping.

In the alleys of Gmunden, lovingly designed shops invite you to take a tour of the city. Gmunden is particularly worth a visit during the festival week.

The other places of the Traunsee, Traunkirchen, Ebensee and Altmüster, are often favored by the wind, which means that this region is characterized by water sports. Surfing, sailing, and kite surfing are just a few of the many options.

Our tip:

One of the most exciting sights on Lake Traun is the so-called Schlösserfahrt on the nostalgic steamship Gisela.
