Summer in Austria: things to do in Hallstatt

Activity holidays

meet relaxation

In Hallstatt, summer pits you face-to-face with a fundamental decision: will you seek out exercise, explore the mountains on foot or on your mountainbike, enjoy the view across the Salzkammergut from the Dachstein and go sightseeing all over the region? Or perhaps you should unwind on a ship or boat gliding serenely across Lake Hallstatt, soak up some sun in one of the many lidos and go for a leisurely evening stroll through the picturesque town centre? Well, we think it’s probably best to stay a couple of days longer and go all-in on what’s on offer.

More exciting leisure activities

Besides these activities, which are definitely a must, the Salzkammergut and Hallstatt offer many other things to do:

  • Lots of opportunities to take a dip in the region: Whether it’s lakes, outdoor swimming pools or spas you prefer, the Salzkammergut has you covered. The lidos dotted all around Lake Hallstatt are great spots for sunbathing and swimming on a hot summer’s day. Between May and September, Lake Hallstatt’s average temperature of 18 to 22 degrees Celsius guarantees that a dip is always fun. Fun is also key in Bad Goisern’s outdoor swimming pool, only a few kilometres from Hallstatt. Kids especially will love the 60-metre super-slide. If the weather plays afoul of such endeavours, there’s the Eurotherme spa in Bad Ischl, Grimming Therme spa in Bad Mittendorf or the Narzissen Vital Resort in Bad Aussee.
  • Action and adventure, waterborne or skyborne: The Traun in Bad Goisern is an ideal white-water course for rafting. Your whole family is in for an adrenaline kick here (please note that you are required to be a very strong swimmer). Canyoning will teach you to look at water with entirely new eyes. The Salzkammergut has over 20 canyons waiting for you to explore. If you’d rather take to the air than get wet, check out paragliding off the Krippenstein. With your descent covering 1,500 metres from start to landing, you’ll gain a pretty good impression of what being able to fly must be like.
  • Hole-in-one surrounded by mountains: Bad Ischl offers you the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent vista while improving your golf handicap on an 18-hole course.
  • Will poor weather spoil your summer holiday?  Absolutely not – Hallstatt and its surroundings offer lots of indoor activities, too. We’ve put together a list of the most exciting sights for you to see.
